While the smoothness of coffee depends largely upon individual taste, medium roast beans are generally considered the smoothest and most balanced beans. Medium roast coffee is roasted just long enough to develop complex and rich flavors but not so long that smoky and roasty notes dominate the other qualities. Medium roast coffee beans retain some sweetness and acidity and balance the body and flavor.

Whole bean coffee is appreciated for its freshness, aroma, and ability to control the grind size. Ground coffee is valued for convenience, consistency, and lower equipment needs.
