Here at San Francisco Bay Coffee, we believe that delicious coffee and social responsibility go hand in hand. When you purchase our coffee, you're not only enjoying a world-class brew but also supporting our efforts to improve the working conditions on coffee farms, enhance the welfare of coffee-growing communities, and promote the health of our planet. We're committed to investing in sustainable labor and environmentally friendly practices in the regions where we source our beans, with a particular focus on supporting small farmers who often lack the resources to verify their adherence to these crucial practices.

That's where Enveritas comes in. We've partnered with this nonprofit organization, which provides performance assessments designed to monitor and track progress over time and identify areas of need. By utilizing technology such as satellite imaging and conducting onsite visits, Enveritas develops these assessments to help coffee farmers participate in a globally sustainable coffee industry. San Francisco Bay Coffee, alongside other roasters, funds Enveritas' work, supporting their goal of eradicating global poverty within the coffee farming industry by 2030.

What is Enveritas Verification?

Enveritas verfication is an assessment process that evaluates a wide range of social, environmental, and economic criteria, grounded in international protocols and conventions such as the International Labour Organization Conventions on Child Labor, Forced Labor, and Trafficking; the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child; and the World Health Organization's classification of hazardous pesticides. Through this verification, we can better understand the achievements and challenges faced by the farms we source from while supporting Enveritas' mission. Roasters are then asked to invest in continuous improvement activities such as farmer support, supplier engagement, and participation in collaborative initiatives to take action on sustainability challenges identified in the assessments.

What does Enveritas verification measure?

Ethical Labor Practices

The verification measures the rish of child labor, forced labor, and human trafficking in the production process. It also meausres whether workers receive fair wages, have safe working conditions, and enjoy the right to associate freely.

Environmental Protection

The verification covers criteria related to deforestation, pollution, biodiversity protection, soil conservation, water conservation, and energy conservation. It helps evaluate coffee production's impact on the environment and whether farming practices are eco-friendly.

Safe and Responsible Chemical Use

Enveritas verification evaluates whether GMOs and banned pesticides are used in coffee farming. It also verifies whether farmers handle chemicals safely and apply effective pest and disease management strategies.

Social Welfare and Community Development

The certification takes into account the welfare of coffee farming communities by measuring whether clean water, decent housing, worker rights and benefits, and non-discrimination practices are in place. It also considers the education and training opportunities available to farmers.

Economic Sustanability

Enveritas verification evaluates whether farmers receive transparent pricing, practice ethical business methods, and have access to financial resources. It aims to measure whether coffee production is economically sustainable and that farmers have opportunities for growth and development.

Quality Assurance and Traceability

The verification process helps maintain high-quality coffee production by promoting quality improvement, traceability, and accurate record-keeping. This helps to ensure that consumers receive a high-quality product while also supporting transparency within the supply chain.

Why is Enveritas verification important?

Enveritas verification plays a crucial role in promoting a sustainable and socially responsible coffee industry. It provides a tangible benchmark for evaluating the practices of coffee farmers and helps to create a transparent supply chain. To achieve a claim of Responsibly Sourced from Enveritas, roasters must invest in continuous improvement activities including providing farmer support programs directly to coffee farmers. As a result, consumers can make informed choices about the coffee they purchase, knowing that their favorite brew supports ethical and sustainable practices.

100% of San Francisco Bay Coffee’s 2023 coffee purchases were Responsibly Sourced per Enveritas Standards.
