Iced Coffee & Cold Brew


Now that summer heat is in full swing, cold coffee is becoming more popular. Some people hear the terms Iced Coffee & Cold Brew and think it’s the same thing. However, there are many differences that most coffee junkies don’t know about.

The Brewing Process, Iced Coffee vs. Cold Brew

One main difference between the two types of coffee is the way they are brewed. Iced coffee is hot brewed coffee that has been cooled down with ice.  In addition, the hot brewed coffee can be left in the fridge overnight rather than having ice water down your hot coffee.

On the other hand, Cold brew is brewed without heat.  Coffee grounds are steeped in cold water for up to 24 hours, creating cold brew coffee. This method created less acidity that typical iced coffee because it oxidizes over a long period of time. Not to mention, cold brew is typically more expensive if bought at a coffee shop, because of the fact that it takes longer to brew.

Caffeine levels in Iced Coffee vs. Cold Brew

Caffeine content can vary by the way coffee is brewed.  However, there isn’t a big difference between caffeine content with cold brew and with iced coffee, this mainly depends on where you get the coffee from.

  1. I use 1 cup of SF French Roast whole beans coarse ground to 4 cups of cold filtered water from my fridge; 3 batches of 4 to 1 that brews on the counter for 12-15 hours. Filter grounds through 3 layers of cheesecloth in a fine metal strainer and then filter the coffee, 8 ounces by ladle, through multiple paper filters for each ladle. Iced coffee is superb.
